“Internship for us is a mutual learning process with the young minds and new thoughts of today in shaping the future of tomorrow.”

Objective of the Program

The Internship Program of LAKSHYA is an initiative to build the capacities of students and individuals wanting to understand the development sector, by providing them with an opportunity to gain practical work experience related to their academic program or future work in a field related to our mission.

We consider our internship program as a wonderful opportunity for mutual learning. The ideas and experiences, which the interns bring with them, add value to our interventions and strengthen the capacities of the team members.  In addition, to enable us to benefit from the work undertaken by Interns.

We know and very well understand that internships offer a chance to explore a potential career without having to make a long-term, life decision. By actually participating in a field that interests an individual, one can not only have the opportunity to "get the foot in the door," but also acquire practical skills and make valuable contacts. We evaluate it as a test drive to gauge how reality measures up to ones expectations.

Basics of our programme

In order to reach the wider section of enthusiastic contributors and learners we have divided our internship program under five category of inclusions and they are :

  1. School students  between the age group of  14 – 18 [ class VIII – XII ] from the schools of Delhi and NCR to give them an first hand opportunity to get involved with our projects related to media, communication, science , children and development as a part of their curriculum during their summer and winter vacations  and also as per our program.
  2. College & Univ. Students:  Undergraduate and postgraduate students from Indian colleges and universities who wish to get trained in the development sector and also contribute their capacities.
  3. Students from media institutions :  LAKSHYA  is primarily a organization working with children and youth on the domain , media for development. Therefore as our specialized area we have tailormade internship program plan for media students to meet their requirements of summer training and internship.
  4. International Students:  During the last five years we have observed increasing interests of international students to work in the development sector in the Indian sub continent and in South Asia. To meet their requirements  we introduced the international internship program from students studying  in  the undergraduate and postgraduate courses of international colleges and universities.
  5. Professional:    We were approached by working professionals many times  expressing their interest to contribute during their weekends and free time not just as a volunteer but as an intern by which they can be evaluated , certified and it carries a value in their carrier. Looking in this area of interest we have introduced an internship program for working professional to meet their specific requirements and also mutually enjoy the learning experience

Meaningful Assignments

Gone are the days of using interns as simple "go-fers". Students are seeking opportunities that will stimulate them and provide real experience. Therefore we design pur program  which ensures the assignment of challenging projects and tasks. Effective assignments are coupled with adequate supervision so as to provide an information resource and to ensure interns are keeping pace. We also keep in mind  of additional projects available in case an intern successfully completes a project ahead of schedule and try to involve them in  all the organisational  events and processes such as staff meetings and allow opportunities for networking and informational interviewing with key personnel.

Appropriate Documentation

Documentation is very important for effective learning to take place. Well documented learning objectives provide clear direction and targeted goals for the intern. This ensures both parties envision the same experience and reduces the possibility of misunderstanding and disappointment. Effective learning objectives are concise and measurable.
We develop a profile page of the intern in our intra and internet platform  where each and every work detail of the intern is documented. It primarily includes  the internship program mission,  work plan, profile of the intern,  and work reports  and all submitted works and evaluation reports In most instances, the intern’s institution will require the above information if the intern is receiving college credit for the experience. Additional forms beyond those stated above and/or agreements may be necessary for college credit depending on the institution’s  requirements.

Evaluation

An internship can only be a true learning experience if constructive feedback is provided. An effective evaluation to focus on the interns' learning objectives is always identified at the start of the internship. We take time to evaluate both a student's positive accomplishments and weaknesses and work on it to see that it just does not become an working experience but a learning experience as well.

Utilizing interns in our organization is not just a process but a program and we seriously do some careful planning before creating an internship program so that those months of working together remains a life learning experience of values and learning to work in life!

If you are interested in the Internship Program then please submit the  online internship application form together with  the required  attachments  and a  general statement of purpose to indicate why an internship is being sought, and what is expected from the experience and areas of interest.
